Privilege

“You’re speaking from a place of privilege”

Like, what’s wrong with that? I don’t really see the problem in having privilege. Some people’s ancestors done what they could so that their kin didn’t have to go through such hardship. Isn’t that the whole point? To live in a way where you can make things better for those that come after you. Not everyone’s been through the mud. Not everyone’s had the kind of struggles that makes they’re hands tough, but why would we want them to? Why would we turn hardship into something to be worshipped like it’s a badge of honour.

The truth is, some families had better cards handed down to them, some didn’t. That’s not on them. That’s life and life as unfortunate as that is, it isn’t always fair. What matters is what we do with what we’ve been given. If you’ve had it rough, the aim should be to make sure that those coming after you don’t have to go through the same struggle you did. If you’ve had privilege, there’s no shame in that, just recognise it and hopefully use it to uplift those around you, well then again you don’t have to because it is not your responsibility either.

I don’t get when pain, struggle and suffering became a fetish. Like unless you’ve crawled through fire and battled Lord Voldemort, your wins don’t count. Struggle can teach you, yeah, but so can peace, stability and opportunity. Wanting ease doesn’t make you soft. Building comfort for the future isn’t weakness.

Privilege isn’t the enemy, struggle isn’t the prize. The real win is creating a life where the next person has more choices, more comfort, more freedom. That’s not something to resent. That’s something to aim for.

Then again, I’m probably speaking from a perspective not many can relate to because I haven’t had to live such a difficult life, unless it was caused by my own negligence.
